American Literature Colonial Period to 1900 (AML2010)

Hello, students, and welcome to Broward College Online! My goal in AML 2010 is to introduce you to American literature from the colonial era to the beginning of the 20th century. We will explore readings from a variety of  authors, including Puritan poet, Ann Bradstreet;  founders of our nation, Benjamin Franklin and Thomas Jefferson;  Romantic novelist, James Fenimore Cooper; master of the macabre, Edgar Allan Poe;  human rights hero, Frederick Douglass; poets Walt Whitman and Emily Dickinson; and humorist and social critic, Mark Twain.

In this course, you will not only gain an appreciation of these great American authors and the historical periods in which they wrote, but you will improve your critical thinking and writing skills.

  • No textbook is required. All the readings will be in PDF's in the course content

  • No prerequisites needed.

  • This course is held during Session III, Section 536357, January 25th --April 2th

I will always be available to participate in discussions, answer emails, and track your progress to make sure that no one falls behind, trying my best to add a human touch to the online learning environment.

I love meeting students of all ages and backgrounds, so please drop me an email at shonaman@broward.edu and introduce yourself!  I will be happy to answer any questions about my class.
